Rules/Policies

To receive a passing grade in this course, you must write in-class essays at an acceptable college level (grade C or higher). If you do not write in-class essays at an acceptable college level, you will not pass the course.

Homework: I collect and return all assigned homework. It counts. Late homework is not accepted.

Turning in Your Assignments: Out-of-class assignments (formal essays) must be typed (double spaced and 12 point font) MLA style and turned in by the due date.

Attendance: Attendance is mandatory, and I will take roll each class meeting. As this is a six week course, I will allow one absence.Every absence thereafter will result in a one half grade deduction from your final grade.

Severe Weather: In the event of severe weather – hurricane watch, warning or flooding, please rely on the local media to announce when/if MDC will close. We are often reluctant to close in these situations, so do not just assume that MDC is closed just because DCPS or FIU has announced closings.

Textbooks: Bring to class every day and a Blue Book on Thursdays.

Paper format: MLA style; Out-of-class essays must be typed

Write in-class essays using blue books, which may be purchased at the campus bookstore, using only blue or black ink. You may single or double space in-class essays, as you choose. Observe the margins

Revising Essays: Revising out-of-class essays after a grade has been assigned is allowed only on a failing essay. If you wish to revise an out-of-class essay, discuss the matter with me. The subject matter of the revision must be the same as the subject matter of the original. You must provide documentation that you have met with a tutor in the Writing Works on a revision.

Plagiarism: Intentional plagiarism occurs when someone submits work done by someone else, or submits work, part of all of which is taken from a printed or internet source, with no documentation of the source. Unintentional plagiarism occurs when students are not sure of when or how to acknowledge sources. See me if you have questions. The most serious consequence of plagiarism at the college level in my class is failure and possible expulsion from the college.
